Selecting the right violin luthier can greatly impact the quality and longevity of your instrument.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your violin receives the best care, whether for routine maintenance or specialized repairs, leading to improved sound, playability and overall performance.
- Experience & Specialisation - Ask the luthier, how many years of experience do they have in making and repairing violins.
- Reputation & Reviews - Ask the luthier to show you their portfolio showing examples of their past work. Also, check online reviews and ask for recommendations from musicians along with local music schools.
- Certifications & Qualifications - Ask the luthier to show you that they are certified and trained from a recognized institution.
- Services Offered - Ask the luthier what services they provide (e.g., repair, setup, bow rehairs, custom building). Also ask if then can they provide maintenance advice and long-term care suggestions.
- Quality of Materials - Ask the luthier if they use high-quality materials for repairs, restoration or new custom violin builds.
- Location & Accessibility - Ask the luthier if they offer appointments and if they have a workshop for drop-offs and pickups.
- Turnaround Time - Ask the luthier how long does it typically take to complete common services (e.g., repairs, bow rehair, etc.).
- Price Transparency - Ask the luthier to provide clear, upfront pricing for services and confirm if there can be any additional fees for certain types of repairs or work.
- Warranty & Guarantees - Ask the luthier if they offer any warranties or guarantees on their work or repairs. Find out what is their policy if you're not satisfied with the service.
Finally, and most importantly - do you feel comfortable discussing your violin needs and concerns with the luthier? Are they patient and willing to explain their processes and methods?
