Instrument
Making School - Lecture 2, Templates for Mould
Our second lecture
involves the creation of the actual instrument template (which you will need later on for
corners and reference, see Figure 2A below) and the inside template (Figure 2B) which you
will need to make the mould for our instrument, Figure 2C. Please take note of the length
from the top to bottom.
Our chosen violin is
the Betts Stradivarius (1704), which is from the traditional Italian school, made 300
years ago.
The first task this
lecture is to actually copy the templates, you have two options:
Option 1
Save the file below
(.zip format) by clicking on the link below and saving it on your local disk space. Then
open using Win Zip and open the .jpg images in an appropriate graphics program. These
templates have the actual dimensions required which means that all you would need to do is
print them in such a way as to obtain the same dimension and outline as Figures 2A and 2B.
An A3 capable printer will yield optimal results. Once printed, cut the templates out
exactly around the outlines.
Templates in Zip Format (lecture2.zip), download,
open in Win Zip and open the respective templates (JPG)
Option 2
Copy Figures 2A and
2B and increase their size proportionally to the lengths specified i.e. 351mm or 13.82
inches for the template to make the mould (Figure 2B) and 355mm or 14" inches for the
length of the actual instrument template, from the bottom of the button to the bottom of
the violin (Figure 2A). Once printed, cut the templates out exactly around the outlines.
We can send you the
actual paper hard copies of the templates for you to copy if you are having trouble using
Option 1 or 2, for AUD$10.00 (see below).

Wooden Mould to make Violin |
Once you have the copies of both templates and you have cut them out from the paper or
cardboard exactly around the outlines, paste them onto an aluminium (aluminum) sheet of
around 0.5mm or 0.2 inches in thickness. Cut out roughly around the aluminium sheet with
tin snips. Finish the templates exactly by using a flat file for straight lines and a half
round file to get around the curves.
As can be seen from Figure
2B, there is an overhang from the centre to allow it to be pinned up on our wooden mould.
If you want to skip this
lecture completely, both templates can be created for you for AUD$80.00 ($8 shipping
within Australia), $16 overseas (does not qualify for sales tax exemption).
Remember that you can come
in to our Violin Making Class on Thursday evenings (6.30 p.m. - 9.30 p.m.), this costs
$30.00 and gives you access to tools and professional help from John Ferwerda himself.
Harpsichord making class is on Tuesday evenings.
E-mail violinmaker@violin-world.com for more
information on this section and the violin and harpsichord making classes.
